Vietnam takes new look approach to banking

The Vietnamese banking system has been affected by the global recession, as have most other worldwide markets. The difficult economic conditions there have come to a head with the proposed merger of three small banks, all of which have significant liquidity problems. Vietnam’s Central Bank has approved the merger, meaning it should occur without undue delay.

The three banks involved are Ficombank, Vietnam Tin Nghia Bank and Saigon Commercial Bank. Together they have deposits of over VND 120 trillion (£3.6bn) and combined capital of approximately VND 10 trillion (£301m). The liquidity problems are a result of the banks focusing on short-term deposits whilst offering longer-term loans, according to State Bank of Vietnam Governor Nguyen Van Binh. The central bank entered into talks with the management of all three banks, the result of which was a mutual decision to cut costs and merge into one stronger lender.

While the government does have a stake in the newly created bank, it is not saying what is actually involved. The Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam or BIDV, is the state-run entity that will oversee and manage the merger and transition period. Binh stated, “the new bank, after the merger, will have state participation” and this promise of stability may be what has prevented a rush on deposits. Customers and clients have reportedly responded quite calmly to news of the merger and have not pulled out their deposits en masse.

While international investors have largely ignored the Vietnamese banking system, the government’s backing of these institutions and willingness to step in to stabilise the industry is a good sign. Mark Young of Fitch’s credit rating agency said that Vietnam’s financial and banking sector is an “interesting potential growth story for international investors”. In fact, Japan’s Mizuho Financial Group recently purchased a 15 percent stake in Vietcombank, a state-owned lender.

In another interesting move, Vietnam has also begun buying up gold from its citizens. Some see this as a move to deal with increasing inflationary pressures within the country, although the government has stated that it is aimed at promoting “socio-economic development”. Governor Binh commented that part of the purpose of this scheme was also to “prevent gold speculation in the economy, stabilise gold markets and adjust domestic gold prices in accordance with the world price.” Fluctuations in the price of gold have created additional risk for those credit institutions that have participated in such speculation.

Stabilising the banking sector is hoped to have the effect of encouraging deposits, as many Vietnamese citizens view the current banking system as complicated and unwieldy. To the rest of the world, however, the sector is often viewed as outmoded and slow, unable to respond to the lightning-fast changes in markets that today’s environment requires. As foreign competition creeps in, the Vietnamese banking system will be forced to modernise or fail and it is clear that the government does not want to see it fail.

If this merger is truly the first step in overall banking reform in Vietnam, it may also be a first step in creating a stronger economy for the country.

Bollard’s tenure to draw to a close

The banking world is reacting to the recent news that Alan Bollard, Governor of New Zealand’s Central Bank, will step down after ten years at its helm. Famous for his tight control of interest rates, he guided the central bank through a period of both highs and lows, economic prosperity and then into the global downturn. The bank has said it will look for a successor both within and outside New Zealand. Now that the central bank has sole responsibility for setting interest rates within the country, the economic impact of this position will take time to find an appropriate successor.

Bollard, a New Zealand native, graduated with a PhD in Economics from the University of Auckland in 1977. Within ten years he had been appointed head of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research and remained in that post for seven years. Beginning in 1994 he headed New Zealand’s Commerce Commission for four years, then served as Secretary to the New Zealand Treasury until 2002. In September of that year he was appointed governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and has served in that capacity ever since. He has also been involved in either writing or editing three books about New Zealand’s economy.

Bollard has brought a wide range of economic and fiscal experience to the bank, including working to enhance the transparency of the decision-making process. He worked to promote bank regulation so that New Zealand, rather than Australian rules, would prevail. He is also a proponent of sharing information with other, similarly situated central banks, working closely with the Bank of Norway and Singapore’s Central Bank. Modelling best practices is a way he believes New Zealand is able to exert greater control over the actions that will best suit its economy and people.

Several replacements have been suggested for Mr Bollard, including the Deputy Governor, a man by the name of Grant Spencer. Mr Spencer is also the Head of Financial Stability and would be a logical choice, although as an internal candidate he might not bring as much “fresh blood” to the position as an outsider would. Another internal candidate is the Assistant Governor, Dr John McDermott, who is also Head of Economics.

External candidates could include Murray Sherwin, former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He currently serves as chair of the Productivity Commission. When asked about the possibility of such an appointment, Mr Sherwin declined to comment, as did Arthur Grimes, currently Chairman of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Until he leaves, Bollard has stated he will remain fully engaged and focused on continuing the work he has been doing to help New Zealand emerge from the worldwide economic downturn. Events in the Eurozone countries, as well as the United States and China, are placing economic challenges on the country’s economy, all of which he said he is committed to help resolve.

Rio bosses axe bonus on aluminium loss

Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto said on Thursday that its top executives will not take a bonus this year following an $8.8bn hit on its aluminium business Alcan.

The mining giant reported a 50 percent drop in annual net profits to $5.8bn compared to $14.32 the year before.

Rio CEO Tom Albanese took full responsibility and announced he will forgo his bonus, saying: As the acquisition of Alcan happened on my watch, I felt it only right not to be considered for an annual bonus this year.”

CFO Guy Elliott has also refused a bonus.

Aside from the issues at Alcan, Albanese informed shareholders it was a good result with revenues climbing to $60bn.

Executives turn to MBAs

Obtaining a Masters in Business Administration is a difficult task requiring several years of study in a wide variety of subjects. Specialties in accounting, economics, finance, management and other areas are available, though a number of courses in each area are generally required for successful completion and graduation. Students with an MBA often go on to become managers and executives in larger companies, accountants and CPAs, financiers and other high salary positions.

Many people find the finance specialty of the MBA to be particularly challenging. Courses include subjects as broad as macroeconomic theory or as detailed as specifics about the rise and fall of interest rates relative to various market indices. A considerable amount of detailed mathematics is involved, including statistical modelling. The history of various market sectors provides a foundation for forward analysis of current-day trends.

Courses such as Corporate Valuation, Venture Capital, Finance of Buyouts and Acquisitions, Financial Derivatives, Investment Management and Fixed Income Securities are just some of the subjects that may be required in order to achieve a Finance MBA. The statistical analysis required by some of these courses can be quite involved and may include subjects such as probability modelling, the stochastic or random process, management statistics, differential equations and multivariate analysis. Of course, in the Finance MBA, additional areas of expertise are required to further complicate matters. For example, when including currency calculations, the potential for the rise or fall of one currency against another is a key factor to be considered.

Some of the best business schools in the world, include Stanford, Harvard and the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, all of which are in the United States. In the UK, the London Business School, Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School and the Warwick Business School are all very highly rated for MBA degrees. All of these offer MBAs in finance and many of their graduates have gone on to enjoy extremely successful and lucrative careers in their chosen fields. Some of their better-known graduates include Stephen Bechtel, Chairman & CEO of the Bechtel Group; Sterling Brinkley, former Managing Director of Lehman Brothers and Sir Deryck Maughan, former Chairman and CEO of Salomon Brothers.

While MBA subject matter can be quite challenging, the degree itself offers immediate access to the world of banking, finance and private equity firms. Rather than work their way up from an entry-level position, Finance MBA graduates are likely to be offered much higher positions with a ‘fast track’ to advancement. The time, money and effort invested in an MBA and particularly a Finance MBA, is generally rewarded quite handsomely.

For those who enjoy challenging coursework and real-life scenarios and applications, a Finance MBA can be an excellent investment. Exciting, challenging and rewarding work are just a few of the reasons why individuals opt to pursue this line of education. Taking an MBA course at a high-ranking college, such as Stanford, Wharton, the London Business School or Oxford University, virtually guarantees a top-flight education and excellent credentials on your resume.
